Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
Posted 2005-04-24 01:34:03 PM | Books
I don't read too many books mostly because I feel like they take too long to read but I picked up this book because there was so much being written about it that I went ahead and bought it when I was trying to buy my textbooks this quarter. I'm really bad at writing reviews and I tried doing one just now but I gave up on it. It was going to take me too long to write out my thoughts so why bother when a synposis of this book has already been done to death. So here is one I got from Amazon...Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.
Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. --Barbara Mackoff

So there you go. This is an awesome book and its about 250 pages, but its a small book with nice sized fonts. I definitely recommend you read it. I'm planning on getting The Tipping Point and Freakonomics and Never Eat Alone

The Killers At The Vault In Long Beach

Sans some stupid assholes and getting some kind of liquid dumped on my left shoulder the whole concert was awesome! Especially during Somebody Told Me, where there was just so much bass in the intro. And then during All These Things I've Done!
New favorite song by them is Under The Gun
Opening act Tegan and Sara - Twin sisters from Canada. Songs were all right but the bassist was unlively

The Killers!

BRANDON HAS TURNED INTO A ZOMBIE AND WANTS TO EAT YOUR BABIES

Brandon at the synth. His tie was pretty snazzy

If there's anyway to cure sadness a band called The Killers must be it

Last night after I fell asleep from writing that lame elmo post I had another zombie dream, but not like my previous ones.
So this time it's night time (obviously, because daylight zombies don't exist), and I'm at this beach but behind me is a huge forest and some huge cliffs. Then for some reason a zombie dog pops out at me with what appears to be a tennis ball (could have been human flesh or something but how do you recall that?)
All right so a zombie dog wants me to play fetch with it. Seeing how my natural reaction is to run away, I eventually decide on the throw and flee route in which I "throw" the ball and "flee" the scene while the dog is preoccupied.
Now I'm hiding somewhere in the cliff area looking over this huge forest and my friend is down by the camp fire at the beach where the dog somehow ends up and I hear the dog say, "Where is he where did that guy go I'm going to kill him" and obviously his eyes are glowing furiously red from his anger. So I non-chalantly step out from my hiding place and say, "Here I am, do you have the ball?" Which prompts the question why I am talking to a dog albeit a talking one and why hasn't this zombie dog killed me and my friend and wait what am I going to do now.
Then I wake up because hey I don't have a dog. The end.

I was briefly talking to Bryan when he mentioned he was at work, at Google and had food. So I drove down there to go eat while we chatted about various things and how he and I both lived in New Jersey. After I ate everything in sight of me we went and drove over to Best Buy and Old Navy where I went to go buy Viewtiful Joe 2 and Bryan went to go return his shirts that he didn't like. As I waived goodbye to Bryan the thought passed through my mind that this was the first time I actually hung out with someone from CA without it feeling like it was either 1) some CA event or 2) some unofficial event that I was only invited to because I just happened to be in the room and nobody knows what the fuck.
Evaluating my time at CA, I don't know anyone at all. I'm just a mere acquaintance to everyone there. A perpetual wallflower for three years running. Half the time while I'm there I feel like I'm not even there. I'm too old of a member where everyone knows who I am so they don't really feel the need to talk to me that often. It kinda sucks but I understand the situation, they have to keep their member count and to be honest I'm just dead weight to them since I won't be coming back next year. There's nothing to gain investing in me.
Sam. Sam's my roommate but is that all? Would we even talk if not for that fact? I mean we both basically put our blind faith 2 years ago that we both wouldn't be horrible roommates to each other so at least we have that, right?
Then someone not even remembering that I went to NYC. I guess I shouldn't be really mad at that but when you feel totally invisible it sucks that you get a confirmation of that fact. Yeah I know you came in on a different flight and you were with your own group the whole time but yeah it still blows being forgotten.
And Chris, the organizer of the trip. I don't understand why I was even invited but I'm glad he invited me.
And then there's just various other members in CA who have been nice to me but let's be honest here, we don't hang out and the only time we see each other is for CA. Is that how it is with other members? I'm pretty sure it's just me. Off the top of my head of people from CA that I hang out with:
Yeah short list. In fact I really only hear things from Sam. Sam says, "Hey someone is having a party" or "Hey someone's birthday dinner is tonight." I'm always the last to know. Usually I don't mind because I know how it is planning something and not remembering to invite people and knowing people feel awkard being at an event that they weren't personally invited to attend, but let's be serious, my name is probably at the bottom of that list.
I don't even know where I'm getting at with this. I don't know what the fuck.

The Plaza Hotel
Posted 2005-04-06 08:17:47 PM | New York
While we were in New York a group of us stumbled upon Plaza Hotel, this hotel on Fifth Avenue is set to be forever transformed from a hotel into a mixture of retail stores, residentials and hotel rooms. According to this article in the NY Times, the Landmark Preservation Commission has deemed only the exterior to be protected from destruction. So while it may look the same on the outside, it'll be completely different on the inside. I'm just glad I got to go in there and take a look around before they completely transform it. I think they had $40 Pizza in there though so I doubt I could ever afford to stay in there anyways.
I <3 New York

Spring Break in New York was a blast. Living in NYC was a complete 180 from my experience of living in California. There were so many places to go and so many sights to see and so many people who came on the trip (varying at times from 16-24). I'm so glad I went and now I feel like living in NYC, except the rent is high. New York is so beautiful though.
Friday

Met up at Cha and drove to Long Beach Airport and took the red eye flight to NYC. Finally got to play with my PSP :)
Saturday

Arrived at 4AM New York time. After everyone came in some of us decided to go out and look around where we were living. Then we went to some diner and then went back to our hotel and crashed for the day.
Later on in the afternoon we all got up, got out and went to buy our Metro Cards. These things cost $24 but worth every penny as we must have used the subways at least 50 times throughout our trip. All 18+ of us now (with Sean and Linda having arrived earlier in the day) managed to get into one car and we went all the way down to Chinatown. We ate at some Dimsum place but I forget the name, the food was decent having a different flavor than the dimsum I have here in California but it still tasted good.
This is where a lot of people split off, I personally had to head over to Penn Station to go take a train to New Jersey to visit my Aunt/Uncle/Cousin who lived in New Jersey and were about to move out of the house they had lived in for 15 years. It took me about 2 hours to finally get up there. First the Green Line shutdown in Chinatown so I had to walk all the way back up Canal St. to take the Yellow Line over to 34th where I walked on over to Penn Station. Then I had to find the train station and then wait for the train to arrive. All said and done I make it into Metro Park at 5:45PM.
So my aunt, uncle and cousin are waiting for me for 3 hours because they thought I was coming in earlier pick me up and we make a quick stop into my old stomping grounds at Irving Park Elementary where I went to Kindergarten. I also saw my old house that was within view of the school. We also went to go see their old house that I use to goto often. I also saw the Highland Pizza place that was still there after all these years. I had almost no recollection outside of those three things and it's really odd how different my perception the neighborhood was compared to what it really was.
Here's what I did while I was with my relatives
Ate at this Italian place called Johnny Carinos
Played pool with my Uncle and cousin
Found out my Uncle played classical guitar.
Went to sleep on a bed
Woke up and ate some breakfast, saw that they had a nice view whenever the sun sets in NJ. Awesome view and a huge ass backyard.
Watched The Matrix on a 60" TV
Went to eat at some Malaysian place but it was more like Pan Asian.
Then I went back into NY to go find the rest of the group then SOHO; Dinner at this Thai place; Desert at Serendepity 3; Sam and I also broke the bed.
Monday

Rain, Pouring Rain. Went around by myself to SOHO, bought a shirt and a blazer at H&M; Slept at the Toys R Us because it was soaking wet and I was dead tired. Watched Get Cool at some theater near Times Square with Kat, Men Fei, Danny Tea, Harry; Diner at Bubba Gumps in Time Square; Watched a comedy show at Caroline's Comedy Club also in Times Square
Tuesday

Got up late, went to Times Square with Chris, Selena, Sean, Meng Fei, Charlie, Kat and Harry. Went to a couple of stores then we went to White Castle where Meng Fei , Harry, Sean and I ate a 30 pack of White Castles. Visited World Trade Center then I went with Harry, Sam and Charlie to the Financial district and then across the Brooklyn Bridge which took forever. We met up with Mike and Jenn while walking across and we gave Mike his two Whitecastle's. At night, I went to go see Rent with Kat, Danny and his friend Shirley. Rent was awesome
and no Nick Lachey's brother was not in it. Finally for our late night finale we went to a bar called The Big Easy and then over to a bar called Snafu. Got piss drunk, tried to get into a WaMu at 4AM and then passed out on the hotel sofabed.
Wednesday
Went with Sam, Ray, Irene, Michelle, Adrienne, Daniel and Linda to financial district to take a picture of the Bull. Went to SOHO and I just walked around and watched the girls shop. I finally got to eat a New York hotel to complete my mission that Jiner had assigned me. Then headed into Chinatown where no asians would give me a deal on I <3 NY shirts. Frolicked in Central Park before having to rush back home so we could meet up with everyone to go eat at this place called Striphouse which offered us a $38 1.5lb steak.
Later on, more drinking, with Jenn and I fast walking it to and fro.
Thursday
EMPIRE STATE BUILDING!
We tried going on Wednesday but the line was too long. Some lady working at the ESB told us its least crowded in the morning which turned out to be so wrong when we arrived on Thursday because the line was way longer than on Wednesday afternoon. We caught a huge break though because someone didn't want their tickets anymore so Irene, Jenn, Adrienne and I got tickets for free. The only problem was that they were "Youth" tickets so we decided to risk and just explain that we had bought the wrong tickets if they stopped us. And once again we caught a lucky break when the lady scanning tickets didn't look to see if they were Adult or Youth. We eventually made it to the top and the view was awesome
; Rushed back to meet with the rest of the group and then we took taxis to the airport and then flew back here to Long Beach, then Irvine.
